OSU CASCADES PROJECT MAP

OSU Cascades is currently transforming a former landfill and pumice mine into a 120-acre campus expansion in Central Oregon. Maul Foster & Alongi (MFA) is providing environmental and civil engineering for the site, and supported the University with an open house to inform the public about the project and answer questions. Working within a tight timeframe, I collaborated with MFA and the University to create a suite of printed posters for the event.
One of the posters needed was a map illustrating work at the site. The client handed off an initial sketch and we used this as a jumping off point for a video call discussion. I asked clarifying questions to gain an understanding of the project and determine how we could simplify the map and make it easier for a public audience to understand. In the finished designs I used plain colloquial language, simple shapes, a minimal color palette, and consistent styles paired with a legend to meet this goal. I also introduced the idea of separating the information into two different maps to make it more digestible. The finished suite of posters included a map illustrating past work at the site (Phase I), and a second map illustrating current and future work (Phase II).
